GUIDE / CALLING

An assistant that calls and listens in.
What can it do, and what is allowed?

Updated 3 October 2026

The short answer

An assistant with its own phone line can hold conversations you now hold yourself: booking a table, making an appointment, checking something, always after your approval. In a meeting it can listen in and then prepare the report, the agreements and who said what. Two rules always apply: an AI that calls says it is an AI (required in the EU since August 2026), and whoever records says so and offers a real way out.

Why a phone line makes a difference

In the Netherlands a lot is still arranged by phone: the GP (first contact “often by phone”, according to the Dutch research institute Nivel), and part of the restaurants, garages, hairdressers and tradespeople. An assistant without a phone gives you a number. An assistant with a phone holds the conversation.

For talking, ChatGPT is very good too: you can speak to it in the app. It does not offer that in combination with calling a business on your behalf, in Dutch, with a report in your inbox.

The rules in brief

An AI that talks to people says it is an AI, at the first contact at the latest (EU AI Act, Article 50, since 2 August 2026). In the Netherlands, recording a conversation you take part in is not a criminal offence; for business use the GDPR applies, and saying so is necessary but not always enough. Recognising other people’s voices requires their explicit consent. Other countries have stricter rules; in Germany, for example, recording without consent is a criminal offence. This is not legal advice; when in doubt about your own situation, ask a lawyer.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI assistant call a restaurant to book a table for me?

Yes, in 2026 it can. Google is testing it in the US (English only, on the Pixel 11). A tailored assistant with its own number does it in Dutch, after your approval, and puts the result in your inbox.

May an AI note-taker listen in on a meeting?

Yes, if you announce it, keep the report only as long as needed, do not analyse emotions and do not recognise other people’s voices without their consent. This is not legal advice.

Curious how it sounds?

In the demo you hear an assistant make a call and report back.
